Just copy the digit code to your clipboard, then go to the Safety Number page and long-press on the digit code and select "Compare with Clipboard. You could also just get on a phone call with each other and read out the numbers to verify them and manually mark each other as verified.
There isn't really anything to worry about when it comes to sharing the digit code or QR code in the above methods, but if you're ultra paranoid and want to recognize their voice at the same time as comparing the Safety Number, this is your best bet.
